Alidia Beach Cottages (Guesthouse)

Rare peace and quiet in throbbing Baga.

Set back behind the whitewashed church, this convivial place has beautifully kept rooms and cottages fronting onto the beach. A rare piece of quiet in the otherwise throbbing world of Baga.

Arabian Retreat (Guesthouse)

Nothing to do with Arabia, lots to do with a great-value retreat.

The thing that makes the Arabian Retreat recommendation worthy is the fact that finding a big room with two balconies two minutes away from the beach in an untouristy place in a touristy town in this price range is no easy feat.

Bhakti Kutir (Hut)

All hail the architectural stylings of Mother Nature.

A commendable project of a Goan and his German wife, Bhakti Kutir is ecologically sensitive and atmospherically sublime. Yoga and Ayurveda are integral parts of a stay here, as is a midday nap in a hammock on your curtained off cushion-laden verandah.

One of the reasons Fountainhas is a highlight of Goa.

A well-renowned place that still feels like a hidden gem.

In an old area of Panjim was an old Hindu house. In the Hindu house was a courtyard. In the courtyard was an art gallery. In the art gallery was a spiral staircase. Up the spiral staircase was a room. In the room was one lucky bastard.

Goa, India

Travelling fortune teller with trumpet and 'magical cow' (Photographer: Paul Beinssen)

It's a shame Goa comes burdened with a reputation for louche living, because there's so much more to it than sun, sand and psychedelia. The allure of Goa is that it remains quite distinct from the rest of India and is small enough to be grasped and explored in a way that other Indian states are not.
