Lonely Planet Review
Perfectly located between the big-ticket sights of Sultanahmet, and the shopping, bars, food and clubs of Beyoglu, Galata Residence is a good choice. Its apartments are reasonable value and perfect for families.
A few steps downhill from Galata Tower, this historic building was built in the late 19th century by the wealthy Kamondo family to house indigent Jewish families. It's home now to 15 two-bedroom apartments and a top-floor Greek restaurant. The apartments have spacious bedrooms (the main bedroom has a four-poster bed), a loungeroom, good bathroom and a kitchen. Kitchens are supposedly fully equipped but this isn't always so. They're clean but a little worn in areas. Decor is comfortably homely, though few would call it stylish. Although apartments at the top have views, these can be noisy due to the restaurant. There's a smaller building a few steps away with seven one-bedroom apartments, each with a kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. Top marks go to the daily servicing in both buildings and the helpful staff.

Author Tip
You'd be mad to miss Galata Tower when you're staying here in its shadow. Originally built as part of the Genoese fortifications in 1348 it commands fabulous panoramas. Afterwards, head to Güney Restaurant, almost at the foot of the tower, for great-value lunch with the locals.
