Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Kooky, there's no doubt about it: chintz statues, bad-taste Roman-inspired friezes, heart-shaped pillows. They certainly broke the mould when they decorated this hotel. We're not quite sure how to take Angel's Home, but we like it. For maximum Angel's experience book the pickup from the airport, a glamorous backseat ride in a vintage sedan.

Oodles of care and attention goes into this place. There are pretty gardens to sit in, a spacious rooftop (A1 views) and a very cosy sitting room. But what we're really taken with are the rooms. If these were in the Galata district 20 years ago, you'd be in for a red-light slap-and-tickle. Like a boudoir from a '70s porn-flick, they're decked out with deep maroon satin bedspreads, heart-shaped pillows, ruffles on ruffles and over-the-top painted mouldings. And spotless. Desperate decor, seductive style, lascivious luxury. We're getting faint just thinking about it and may need to lie down. Avoid the dark ground-floor rooms at the back.

How To Get There

From Ataturk International Airport:
Approximate distance to the hotel is 13 km.

Follow the sea side to the north. After 14km, take the direction of Sultanahmet on the left side.

Taxis or dolmus (shared taxis) are available from the airport. Havas airport buses run to central Istanbul every 30 minutes at peak times, and hourly at around 1200 and at night (journey time: approximately 30 minutes). Public bus no. 96 runs into town approximately every hour 0700-1940. Istanbul has a very cheap public transport system which includes buses, suburban trains and a metro. Yellow taxis and shared taxi minibuses, called dolmuses, are also plentiful. As the hotel is centrally located in the old Sultanahmet district it is easy to walk to many of the main attractions.

Author Tip

Everything else is going to seem disappointingly normal compared with Angel's Home - there's only one other spot in town which can up the ante: Topkapi's Harem. As popular belief would have it, the Harem was a place where the sultan could engage at debauchery at will (and Murat III did, after all, have 112 children!). It's a 10-minute stroll away, within Topkapi Palace.
