Lonely Planet Review

Quotes This well-appointed hostel has some of the cheapest and cleanest rooms in town. It's a great-value option and close to all the sights.

All rooms have shared bathrooms, which are in excellent condition: large and well kept. Six-to-nine-bed dorms are a little cramped, but freshly painted and with good carpets. There are only two double rooms here, rooms No 6 and 7. Make sure you book room 6; room 7 was right by the bathrooms and smelt like it was struggling with a perennial water problem. There's a cellar bar with a huge TV and a fireplace in winter, which opens out onto a pleasant grape-vine-roofed courtyard. There's a nice terrace with lovely views over the Four Seasons Hotel and the Sea of Marmara. This is a great place to watch the sun set, so snuggle into a comfy position and enjoy.

How To Get There

From the Airport or the Bus Station (Otogar), take the Metro to ''AKSARAY'. As you leave the Metro Station, go through the underground passage and straight onto the pedestrian walkway, then walk over a bridge and down the steps to reach the 'YUSUF PASA' Tram Stop. Transfer onto the tram and get off at 'SULTANAHMET'' (the 5th stop). Follow the tram line down (passing several restaurants on the left and the Information Office on the right) to the intersection and traffic lights; cross over to the right and enter the courtyard between St. Sophia on your left and the Blue Mosque a little further on your right. Go all the way through the courtyard and turn to your right at the end. Take the first left at the taxi stop and follow the street all the way down passing the Four Seasons Hotel on the left. The Istanbul Hostel is directly at the end of the street.

Author Tip

You're right in the heart of things here so the question isn't about what to include in an itinerary, but what to exclude. Whatever you do, don't exclude the Basilica Cistern. This Byzantine cistern, built by Justinian in AD532, was the receptacle for water brought by aqueducts from some 20km away.
