Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Hidden away in spectacular private gardens behind Aya Sofya, Konuk Evi (Guest House) is a beautiful reproduction of the mansion which once stood on this site. Accommodation is antique-style but with mod-cons (eg air-con) added since it was rebuilt.

Konuk Evi is run by the same people who run Ayasofya Pansiyonlari. This four-storey timber building was rebuilt in '92 to duplicate the mansion that stood on this site during the reign of Sultan Abdül Hamit II (1876-1909). Here you feel like you're staying in a private mansion instead of a hotel. The ground floor is reserved, as it always was, as living space. This impressive room is yours to enjoy: the two full-length gilded mirrors, parquetry floors, chandeliers and a grand piano. Rooms have original Ottoman-style furnishings complete with brass beds, gilded mirrors and ruffled curtains. Bathrooms are excellent. The garden here is a beautiful backdrop to breakfast, but during inclement weather you'll be moved to the gorgeous Conservatory, complete with chandeliers and mural-painted marble walls. Breakfast has never been so glamorous.

Konuk Evi overlooks Caferaga Medresesi, built in 1560 as a school for Islamic and secular education. Today it's home to the Turkish Cultural Service Foundation which runs workshops in traditional Ottoman arts. It's a great place for a çay (tea) and a chat with the artists-at-work.
