Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Istanbul's best-known and most popular hostel, the Orient has been around forever and, showing admirable staying power, it's still going strong. It's right in the heart of Istanbul's backpacker hub and very close to Istanbul's main sights. It's also one of the cheapest options in the city (without resorting to a flea pit).

The amenities here are as popular with non-guests as they are with guests. The basement Orient bar draws crowds ogling the belly dancing and practising their moves into the wee hours. The rooftop restaurant/bar has terrific views and very friendly staff; happy hour (17:00-20:00 daily) here is an Istanbul must-do on a warm summer's day. The breakfasts at Orient get the thumbs up too (but for other meals eat elsewhere). The simply furnished rooms are generally fine but some are a bit worn. Housekeeping can be a bit lax at times and the carpets in the dorms (four and eight beds) is simply appalling. Bathrooms pass the sniff test - just. All in all a good option if you want to be in the heart of the action and you don't mind less than perfect service.

Author Tip

If you're staying at the Orient and frequenting the bars you may be dreading daylight, but drag your hangover to the sights you must! If you need greasy sustenance have a kiymali pide (mincemeat Turkish pizza) at Karadeniz Aile Pide ve Kebap Salonu. If this won't pick you up nothing will.
