Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Hands up who loves views? This place is for you. Terrace is a teeny guesthouse with only seven rooms - most with great views - and one of the highest terraces in Sultanahmet.

If you can pull yourself away from your room or the terrace, you'll find you're within a short walk of Istanbul's main sights too. Rooms are large, light and simply decorated. All have good bathrooms. Rooms 7 and 4 have private balconies ideal for sharing a bottle of wine and watching the sun set. The room sharing the rooftop with the cute little breakfast salon also has supreme views. The terrace up top is small and a little windy but gives 360° panoramas, trumping most other terraces in the area. The only downside to this place is the ubiquitous but subtle carpet hustle. The reception is a carpet shop and carpets are hung throughout the place with price tags - some may find this a bit annoying.

Author Tip

If you're overdoing the dizzying heights at Terrace you may need to ground yourself. In fact, head underground at the Basilica Cistern. This Byzantine cistern was built by Justinian in AD532, and was the receptacle for water brought by aqueducts some 20km away. The 336 immense columns prop up the curved roof constantly drip-driping on a water floor. Ghostly carp only add to the spooky atmosphere.
