Lonely Planet Review
If you have the time it's well worth spending a night in the lovely traditional Newari town of Bhaktapur. After the daytripping tourists return to Kathmandu, the locals come out onto the streets and you'll have the town to yourself. You can't do much better than the Bhadgaon Guest House, right in the heart of the old town in the gorgeous square of Taumadhi Tole.
From the lovely lobby seating to the great rooftop views over Taumadhi Tole and the Langtang Himalaya beyond, the modern Bhadgaon is a good choice, right in the heart of the old town. The rooms are clean and comfortable but vary in size; everyone wants the top-floor double with its private balcony and great views. The rooftop and lobby restaurants are popular and reasonably priced, which is good because most of the town's tourist restaurants close after 18:00. The new nine-roomed annexe across the square is every bit as good, with good views on the east side through carved wooden windows, but no restaurant. Our best advice is get up early and savour the old town with the locals; potters spin their wheels, women wash their hair in the open-air water pools and mothers play with their kids on temple steps. This is the traditional Newari town you've been hoping for.
