Lonely Planet Review
The Hotel Shangri-La is one of Kathmandu's best hotels. The decor is tasteful, the service is professional, and there are several restaurants and a jazz bar. Best of all is the beautiful central garden with an adjoining restaurant and swimming pool.
At the time of writing The Shangri-la was undergoing serious renovation work to plump it up to five-stars, with a new South African-designed casino, a bar and a fitness centre. The real clincher here is the beautiful and relaxing garden, with its lounges, adjoining swimming pool and twice-weekly garden barbeques. The separate Jazz Gourmet restaurant is one of the best in town, serving up classy French dishes with a jazz theme, though the Shangri-la theme is stretched to its limit with a Lost Horizon Bar and even a Shambhala Café. The wi-fi-enabled hotel is in one of the main embassy districts and so is popular with business travellers.
