Lonely Planet Review

Hotel Utse is a comfortable Tibetan hotel owned by Ugen Tsering, one of the original Thamel pioneers. His long-running Utse Restaurant is also popular. Old-school solid without being spectacular, this is a well-run hotel with good staff. The rooftop area is an ideal place to relax with a book and the welcoming lobby area has plenty of comfortable seating and magazines.

Deluxe rooms have some decorative Tibetan touches and satellite TV but the standard rooms probably offer best value. Roadside rooms, though bright, are also noisy. Super-deluxe rooms have air-conditioning, which in winter doubles as heating. Jyatha is slightly quieter than central Thamel but it's still close to all the facilities.

Author Tip

Head down the alleyway in front of the hotel and you can see thangkas (paintings) being worked on at the Phapa Chengreshi Thangka Painting School. A five-minute walk southwest of the hotel takes you to the Tibetan-style Kathesimbhu Stupa on the edge of the old town.

Curious Fact

The 'Utse' is named after the impressive stupa complex at Samye in central Tibet.
