Lonely Planet Review
Let's face it, as convenient as central Thamel is, after a while the tiger balm sellers can become a real drag. What you need is a friendly and family-run garden guest house, far enough away to feel the stress evaporate but close enough to walk to if you get a sudden desire for some fake Goretex. Et voilà - the very mellow Tibet Peace Guest House.
A five-minute walk northwest of Thamel lands you in the back garden of this friendly family guesthouse; a quiet and mellow hang out. There's often someone hanging out in the lobby listening to music, sipping on one of the small restaurant's wide range of herbal teas. The 22 rooms vary a lot and are spread over several buildings, so it's worth having a dig around to check you have the one you want. Rooms are well-equipped, with lockers and bathrooms, but the big plus point is the lovely back garden, that feels a million miles from Thamel.
