Hibernian Hotel

Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Home to a bank since the 1700s (hence its name), this stately building was only transformed into a hotel in 1998, but its mahogany-rich rooms and sweeping public areas exude an air of time-honoured hospitality.

In the colder months a toasty open fire crackles continuously beneath ornate arches in the forest green lobby. Follow a maze of split staircases (or take the lift) up to 46 earth-toned rooms (try for room No 240 or 242, which both have French doors opening to little balconies). Huge mirrors are everywhere in this place, with walls of them lining the bathrooms, where you'll find loads of Gilchrist & Soames goodies and handy extras like sewing kits. The three suites also have burnished brass-framed mirrors in the living areas above massive TVs, and three full walls of mirrors in lavish bathrooms. Suites also have a second TV in king-size bedrooms. Breakfast is included and is a spread of pretty much anything you could want (don't pass up the pancakes, which are a specialty), and broadband is being installed throughout the hotel.

Author Tip

The corner Hibernian Bar is a favourite with Kilkenny Cats (as the city's locals call themselves, after the nursery rhyme) and offers a narrowed-down menu from the hotel's restaurant, the more contemporary (albeit rustic-sounding) Jacob's Cottage. The real action is below ground in the cavernous, belle époque Morrisons bar (open late).
