Exclusive, elegant, but also a little snooty, the Royal Meridien has a fabulously secluded location at Ao Taling Ngam. It's extremely private and facilities run to tennis courts, watersports, and the inevitable luxury spa. The Thai-gabled villas sprawl up the hillside and golf carts transport guests between the rooms and the sand.
The lofty hillside location ensures magnificent sea views and sunsets, but it also means a long hike (or a short golf cart ride) from your front door to the sand. The interior design is very sophisticated, with lots of tasteful Thai furnishings and fabrics, and the feeling of isolation from the tourist hordes is worth the hefty price tag. With seven - that's right, seven - swimming pools, three restaurants and a host of sports and leisure facilities, there isn't much reason to leave the compound. This is the Meridien's strength and its weakness - some people like having everything on tap while others feel a bit isolated from the rest of the island.

The Royal Meridien is almost an independent city state, with dozens of diversions to keep guests entertained. You could pass a couple of days just exploring the different swimming pools in the grounds. Other possible activities include diving and watersports, cooking classes and motorcycle rental (in case you want to escape and do a bit of exploring).
