Lonely Planet Review

Quotes A nautical theme is one thing, but rooms in converted teak rice barges with decks that literally are, well, decks? This is one of the most characterful hotels on the island and the yo-ho-ho spirit and ship-shaped swimming pool will definitely keep kids amused.

This may be a theme-ing too far for fans of restrained minimalism, but people who want a luxury resort with a sense of fun need look no further. The large, well-styled hotel rooms are amply luxurious, but the boat house rooms have the edge - each has a TV lounge, a wood-panelled bedroom, and a private terrace on the back deck. The boats are 'moored' in a lush tropical garden that would make David Bellamy proud and the luxury hotel facilities include a spa, a beachfront restaurant, a watersports and diving centre and, of course, that pirate ship-shaped swimming pool, complete with cannon-shaped water jets. It's wonderfully over the top and all the more inviting because of it.

Author Tip

If you can afford one of the boat suites, there's no real reason to go ashore, except to stroll down to the sand. Hat Choeng Mon is friendly and low-key but most things can be arranged at the hotel, including diving trips and island boat tours.
