Angkor Wat on sea would be a good way to describe this extremely imaginative boutique resort at Hat Choeng Mon. The foyer is a riot of carved-stone Naga serpents and the rooms and bungalows feature Thai fabrics, hardwood furniture and natural light wells in the bathrooms.

The White House falls somewhere between a boutique hotel and a garden resort. The lobby is arranged around a plant-filled courtyard, with all sorts of interesting old Thai furniture, and further towards the beach is a pleasantly low-key spa and a sky-blue pool, surrounded by red-tiled villas containing the suite rooms. Huge jungle plants burst out of pots along the path to the beach and someone has put some serious thought and consideration into the interiors. Service is faultless; fresh fruit and flowers await you in your room when you check in. It's very intimate and romantic and well worth the price tag.
