If you're a bit sick of back-lane backpackers with mousehole entrances, then it's time to enter the Dragon. A grand open-plan stairway leads up to a broad reception, lounge area and quiet, characterless rooms.

It's great to find a Chinatown backpackers that's quiet but still has views of the streetside bustle courtesy of floor-to-ceiling tinted windows in the well-run lobby. All bedrooms in this new place are even quieter, thanks to the absence of windows (all rooms have air-con), but a new clutch of rooms on the third level above the passable dorm rooms are under construction, and will offer views, as well as attached amenities. Veneer panelling next to whitewalls, a smattering of pot plants, a video projector in the spacious lounge area and some spot lighting make the Red Dragon a good place to hang out, with cheap beer as an extra incentive. There's rumoured to be a pool table coming soon. Downstairs there's an Internet centre and an open-air bar/cafe.
