Lonely Planet Review
South of KL Sentral, the YMCA is a little out of the way for sightseeing, but it's well connected to public transport and is situated in a pleasant part of KL. There's a good range of facilities, including a gym, shop and language courses. The rooms are comfortable and air-con rooms come with bathroom.
The Y might be 100 years old in 2005, but it is far from looking its age. This is thanks to a recent make over, including a new lift, a wide and bright ground-level reception area and a slight reshuffle of rooms. The dorms are gone, and many of the 58 rooms now have a bathroom as well as air-con, TV and IDD telephone. The atmosphere of the place is akin to a summer camp, but far less rowdy and a damn sight cleaner. Children are very welcome at the Y - there's even a children's activity centre and a child-minding service. Guests are also welcome to use the tennis courts and join in on some of the courses offered.

Author Tip
Jl Thambapillai is famous for its Indian Eateries, but good Malay food can be found here, too, at places such as Restoran Aj Laris (tel: 2260 6110; 65 Jl Thambapillai), where you help yourself to great Malay dishes in kooky surroundings.
Curious Fact
While staying at the Y, why not take a Cantonese language course, or join in on a Scottish dancing session?
