Lonely Planet Review
New backpacker digs here in the winding traditional backstreets of the old town. The combination of modern facilities, clean rooms and a great location away from the main roads make this the best of a new generation of budget options in Lhasa.
There's nowhere better to get a feel for old Lhasa than its old town, which is why the Namchen has the perfect location, in a restored house a stone's throw from the Barkhor Circuit. Rooms are simple but clean, with firm beds, and all share common bathrooms and 24-hour hot showers. The owners clearly understand what's dear to travellers' hearts. There's a bank of internet terminals, a comfy lounge area that catches the winter sun and a rooftop restaurant that offers glorious views towards the golden roofs of the Jokhang Temple. The downers? Well, the common toilets are squatters (but clean), the lower floor rooms have limited natural light and the funky neighbourhood can be noisy. Still, with super helpful Tibetan staff and sociable band of fellow travellers, this is definitely one of our favourites.

Author Tip
The Barkhor Circuit, one of Lhasa's most interesting sights, is just 40m from the front door. The small Nepali import shop just outside the entrance is one of the few places in Lhasa to get imported chocolates and trekking foods.
