Tucked away on a residential street, this renovated hostel is an excellent choice for its spotless dorms, though the private rooms aren't such a bargain. The Albergue also offers a large lounge, good kitchen facilities, plentiful travel information and a spacious garden with an outdoor pool.

The yellow low-rise building looks awfully functional from the outside, with its bottle-glass windows and international flags flying high. Inside it feels a lot like staying in the big, rambling house of a huge Peruvian family, albeit one that's on holiday. It can be eerily quiet here, because Lima's official HI hostel doesn't see as many backpackers as the budget guesthouses in Barranco. Overall, this hostel is best for travellers who value security most of all. Clean, carpeted single-sex dorm rooms with wooden bunk beds are the best value. Private double rooms are overpriced, given that many more charming guesthouses around the city offer better lodgings and services at comparable rates. The single rooms here are fairly priced, though. Take a taxi at night.
