Lonely Planet Review
Nostalgia strikes at this venerable 1920s hotel on the Plaza San Martin. Sadly, the hotel has had persistent plumbing problems and its rooms, though retaining a rare finesse, are increasingly musty from disuse. Yet for anyone chasing the retro atmosphere of the early Republican era, it's a rare treat.
As the doorman ushers you through the gilded doors, your jaw will drop. The gorgeous public spaces are reason enough to celebrate this historic hotel, built to house heads of state and other dignitaries. From the wrought-iron filigree around the reception desk to sapphire-colored carpeting and velvet upholstery, everything speaks of the opulence of bygone days. Of course the guest rooms are also antique, even boasting some original fixtures, such as Art Deco tiling. Most are spacious and well-scrubbed, despite being in dire need of renovations. The bathrooms may not be in especially good working order, though, and don't expect any modern extras apart from cable TV. The staff tend to be a tad haughty, but curious travellers seeking the romance of yesteryear aren't likely to be disappointed by staying here. Airport transfers are available upon request.

Author Tip
Inside the hotel, the grand old bar is an obligatory stop for aficionados of the Peruvian pisco sour, and a string quartet often plays in the domed, stained glass rotunda during afternoon tea.
