Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Housed within the old Great Marlborough Street magistrates court, which previously entertained the likes of Oscar Wilde and Mick Jagger, is a new five-star hotel that mixes colourful history with contemporary luxury.

The hotel's former life is evident in the Courthouse Bar where tables sit within original prison cells and authentic iron bars cordon off the lounge area. The bedrooms are quieter and more reflective than the colourful communal spaces, and muted browns and creams blend effortlessly with the terra cotta-coloured bathrooms. Despite the obvious indulgences - Egyptian cotton sheets and bathrobes so soft you'd like to wear them outside - there are times when the hotel decor doesn't always match up. The bedrooms are gorgeous and the Courthouse Bar is fun, but there are odd touches that somehow mar the otherwise faultless appearance of the hotel. Garish shell-shaped chairs in the reception area sit uneasily with the chic surroundings, and The Carnaby restaurant resembles little more than an upmarket chain pub. Stylistic confusion aside, the service here is exemplary.

Author Tip

The entrance to the Courthouse Kempinski is directly opposite Carnaby Street. It's not as swinging as it was in the sixties, but it's still a great place for original boutiques. Liberty, one of London's original department stores, is great for a browse.
