RECEPTION

Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Industrial decor, blue neon lights and throbbing techno herald your arrival to one of the liveliest budget options in central London. This is not a place for the faint-hearted. The massive Generator is designed purely for those looking to have a rollicking good time. The 207 rooms (830 beds) are spartan with simple metal bunk beds and a sink, but you definitely don't stay here to hang out in your room. Instead you're encouraged (expected) to play with the masses in the Generator Bar. Every night the 'entertainment crew' keep things buzzing with quizzes, DJ's and karaoke, but whatever's on you can guarantee it will involve copious amounts of alcohol, very little clothing and a whole lot of vomiting. An upper age limit of 35 is recommended, but then they never check your ID at dodgy nightclubs, do they?

How To Get There

From London City Airport (LCY):
Distance to Generator Hostel London is 12 miles, approximately 25 minutes' drive.

Getting there. Located within the airport terminal is the Docklands Light Railway station (DLR), which departs regularly for Canning Town, 10 minutes, Canary Wharf, 14 minutes, and Bank, 22 minutes. At Canning Town, visitors should take the Jubilee line to connect to London Underground (Tube) services. King's Cross Underground Station is 700 metres from the hostel. Tickets cost 4 GBP for a single, but a one-day travel pass is more economical and practical for multiple journeys. The airport is also served by local buses and London black taxis. Taxis to the hostel cost approximately 30 to 50 GBP. Prices are all subject to change.

Getting around. The London Underground (Tube) and buses are the easiest ways to travel within London. Single tickets are expensive, but an electronic Oyster card offers a cheaper fare. Oyster cards can be purchased from ticket offices for 3 GBP (refundable). Daily or weekly travel passes are the most economical way to travel, and are valid on buses, trams, trains, and DLR, as well as on the Underground. Black taxis are available on the streets, but can be expensive. Driving is not recommended for visitors and a congestion charge zone is operated in central London.

Author Tip

It's unlikely you'll be up to much sightseeing after a night at the Generator Bar, so take your weary head and walk five minutes south to Russell Square for a small patch of green grass and a cup of coffee from the on-site cafe.
