Quotes Beautifully located on the corner of a cobbled square sits Malmaison, a boutique hotel catering for the media, arty and business types that inhabit fashionable Clerkenwell. Housed within a converted Victorian nursing home, the 'Mal' promises 97 individually designed rooms.

Unlike some of its contemporaries, Malmaison delivers on its promises. When it comes to individual design it's not just a question of changing a few cushion covers or the colour of the curtains. Each room is different - they've obviously had a lot of fun experimenting with retro wallpaper and bold colours. It's young, fresh and cutting-edge enough to be hip, but not so outrageous as to scare off the big-bucked businessmen. The lobby and the restaurant are equally 'conservative cool' but you can't help thinking that an added flourish here or a quirky design feature there would give the hotel that little extra 'oomph' needed to propel it into a league of its own. That said, this is the seventh Malmaison hotel to open in the UK in the last 10 years, so conservative chic is obviously the new black.
