Lonely Planet Review

Quotes The 'Met', as it's fondly called by those in the know, is most famous for the drunken antics of British celebrities in its members bar. When it first opened in 1997 it seemed that not a night went by without some kind of fracas involving a celeb and the waiting paparazzi.

These days things are a little quieter around the Metropolitan, but it still attracts an uber-cool, well-heeled crowd. A blend of sophistication and simplicity reigns throughout - the understated design must surely be part of its success. Floor-to-ceiling windows dominate the bedrooms and ensure that you wake up to Hyde Park views or go to bed looking at the bright lights of Mayfair. Subtle colours, pear-wood panelling and Egyptian cotton sheets whisper, rather than shout, elegance and luxury. Asian influences can be seen in the carefully selected pieces of furniture from the Far East and add a Zen-like calm to an already peaceful hideaway. It's as if the Met, like its previous customers, has grown up and now favours nights in with the TV rather than nights out on the town.

How To Get There

Getting there. The Heathrow Express train service to London Paddington Station leaves every 15 minutes. The airport is also on the Underground's Piccadilly Line, which takes passengers into Hyde Park Corner underground station which is a fifth of a mile from the hotel. Hotel staff can arrange airport transport and London's black taxi cabs also service Heathrow Airport and cost around 65 GBP to the hotel. Bus services include the Airbus Heathrow shuttle to London Victoria or King's Cross railway stations. The easiest way to get around London is by using the Underground (metro) or bus services. Alternatively, black taxi cabs can be hailed in the street.

Driving directions. When driving from Heathrow Airport, take the M4 motorway to London and follow signs to Hyde Park Corner. At Hyde Park Corner, go straight over the roundabout towards Piccadilly. Take the first road on the left onto Old Park Lane and the hotel is on the right hand side.

Author Tip

No self-respecting celebrity would visit London and not dine at Nobu, the ridiculously popular Japanese restaurant within the Metropolitan. Regular punters have to wait months to secure a table, but if you're a guest at the hotel then you're guaranteed a table.
