Lonely Planet Review

Set on a small, sunny plaza in the centre, the Cruz Sol is a clean hostel that makes a great base for seeing the sights. The newly renovated rooms have yellow walls and cheerful decor. They're not the largest rooms in Madrid, but they mostly face onto the street or the plaza and receive plenty of natural light.

The bedrooms are just about high enough above street level to make sleep possible. It's a well-run, friendly place - your room will be spotlessly clean and will probably have the odd splash of colour, your questions about what to do and see in Madrid will most likely be answered, and your bed will be comfortable. Add in a package of facilities that aren't always standard in your average Madrid hostel - newish bathrooms, air-con, heating, satellite TV, safety boxes in every room and a hairdryer in every bathroom - and you'll soon discover why this place's appeal is considerable. Arguably the biggest selling point, however, is the location - the hostal is just 50m from the Plaza Mayor.

Author Tip

As the magnificent facades of Plaza Myor are lit up in the evening and the square fills with people and musicians, you may just decide, like Hemingway, that you never want to leave. Drinks don't come cheap here, so compensate with a bocadillo de calamares (roll stuffed with calamari) in one of the surrounding streets - a long-standing Madrid ritual.
