Lonely Planet Review
This is the sort of hostal (cheap hotel) to come to if you like a homely feel and discreet owners, and you have no desire to enter into Madrid's considerable backpacker scene. The owners seem to regard everyone who arrives at the door with a degree of suspicion, but they become friendly enough not long after you arrive.
The 22 rooms are a very good deal. Each is simple, with a few nice decorative touches. Recent renovations have left behind simple rooms that are large and excellent central-Madrid value. Bathrooms even come with the odd flourish of style - a touch that budget travellers don't always get treated to. Rooms have wooden floors and even those that aren't street-facing have plenty of light from the colourful light-well that runs down the centre of the building. There's also a pleasant sitting room that feels a bit like your grandmother's drawing room. The only (very minor) drawback is the claustrophobically narrow passageway. Finding a place like this in such an interesting and central barrio is harder than you might think.
