Lonely Planet Review

Hostal San Lorenzo is a terrific deal. The original stone walls and occasional dark-wood beam of this 19th-century building have been left exposed, adding character that is surprisingly hard to find in one of Madrid's oldest barrios.

These hints of another time blend harmoniously with the modern rooms that are comfortable and bright, albeit on the small side. Part of this has to do with the fact that they've chosen their furnishings - occasional wrought-iron, agreeable colours, well-equipped bathrooms - more originally than most. No pastel bedcovers and bog-standard modern art prints adorn these rooms. The combined effect is that of a haven that you'll be more than happy to return to at the end of the day. Although breakfast is not included in the price, they have one of the most original breakfast menus in the city and the breakfast room is light-filled and pleasant - it turns into a quiet, 24hr bar for the rest of the day.

The trip takes 15-20 minutes from the airport depending on traffic. Fares range from € 15 to € 20.
Although most of the Madrid´s taxi drivers are very professional and completely honest, the Airport seems to attract a small number of scamp drivers. We have heard of cases where tourists were asked to pay 2 or 3 times the usual fare. Simply pay and ask for an official receipt (un recibo).
We have also heard of taxi drivers trying to distract travelers from their destination and recommending high cost hotels where they get a commission. This is not the usual stuff but to prevent, be aware.
The bus runs from the international terminal at the airport to the “Plaza de La Independencia” in the center of the city. The fare is about € 2.50. It runs from 6:00am till 1:00am.
There you have two options:
Take the subway at “Plaza de La Independencia”, the station is called Colón. Transfer at B

Author Tip

There's something about this place - it's unmistakeable but we can't quite work out why - that calls out for a Japanese meal. Fortunately, Restaurante Robata, around the corner, is one of Madrid's longest-standing Japanese restaurants. The number of Japanese visitors who end up here should tell you how authentic it is.
