Lonely Planet Review
Hotel II Castillas is one place where a little bit of inside knowledge makes all the difference. Ask for a corner room and you'll be rewarded with a light-filled room with plenty of hardwood floor space and three windows - outstanding for the price in the centre of Madrid.
The rest of the rooms are on the small side, but each contains a writing table and a table-and-chair set for relaxing. The spacious marble bathrooms have some unexpected perks, such as a heated towel rack and a makeup mirror, and the bathtub is something we always like to see in a hotel of this standard. The aesthetic of the rooms is modern and clean-lined - the hotel only opened in 2003 - and the colour scheme is pretty beige and blue. In contrast, the public areas where stained-glass roofs abound and the Mudejar-style roof mouldings in the lobby are superb, suggesting a distinguished heritage in one of Madrid's oldest barrios. Staff are also a picture of attentive personal service and discretion.
