Lonely Planet Review

On entering Dar Sara, you emerge from the small entrance hall into an enchanting garden patio, ringed with eye-catching blue-and-white zellij (ceramic) tiling. In season, the oranges hang like golden globes from the trees while the big, flat leaves of the banana tree provide ample shade.

To one side a bhou (arched loggia) is piled high with crisp white cushions on rich red carpets. In the morning you lounge cross-legged here while you're served a traditional breakfast of Moroccan pancakes and fresh orange juice. At night this pretty alcove is transformed into a romantic nook looking out at the candlelit garden and the petal-filled fountain. Six rooms make this riad (town house) quite sizeable and the blue-and-white tiling meanders crazily from room to room, but the white woolen coverlets and simple blue furnishings keep the effect from driving you mad. The rooms themselves are sizeable, making this riad popular with families, and all have views over the leafy courtyard. The only disappointment is the rather bald roof terrace; after the leafy patio it seems rather parched and uninviting.

Author Tip

As part of the Marrakech Riads group, you can pop along to the Dar Cherifa tea room and gallery. Be sure to ask about any events taking place as you automatically get an invite. Otherwise book an afternoon of pampering at the wonderful marble-faced hammam (bathhouse) at La Maison Arabe.
