Lonely Planet Review

Jnane Mogador is excellent value for money. It's not surprising, then, that it is busy all year round and you will need to book at least two to four weeks in advance. Managed by the charming Isham, it maintains professional standards and enjoys a relaxed, well-cared-for atmosphere.

What strikes one on entering Jnane Mogador is the impeccable finish of the decor. The hotel is actually a large 19th-century riad (town house) restored with the unmost care. It incorporates all the colourful Moroccan architectural features - pretty zellij (ceramic) courtyards, criss-crossing tataoui (geometric bay-tree decorations) ceilings, handsome wooden doors with brass fittings and, of course, bright, stripey carpets and coverlets. It has 17 rooms and yet the tone is relaxed and social rather than teeming with activity, perhaps because this is the hotel of choice for young couples due to the high number of double rooms. There are also some great facilities - a super-duper hammam (bathhouse) with massage rooms (and his and hers masseurs), a terrace restaurant serving some good Moroccan food and free Internet connection.

Author Tip

Do as a long list of libertines have done before: spend your day people gazing in the Djemaa el-Fna from the terrace of the Cafe de France. Once you're fortified on fresh orange juice descend into the fray for some Olympic bargaining in the souqs.
