Marseille's most historic hotel, the Hôtel Beauvau, first opened in 1816, and received luminaries including Chopin, George Sand and Alfred Musset. Between 2002 and 2004 it was completely gutted and renovated, while the rooms' antique Louis-Philippe and Napoleon III furniture was also restored.

Above the down-quilted beds at this grande dame, suspended embroideries inscribed HB (the hotel's initials) give a regal feel to the 73 rooms. They are resplendent, with lavish bathrooms and a turn-down service that includes fresh flowers and calisson (sugared Provençal almond-essence delicacies) on the pillows. Sleep under the stars in the six duplex rooms, whose mezzanine bedrooms lie beneath skylights with retractable shutters. You can specify a courtside room with vistas unfolding over Marseille's rooftops, or a portside room, with glittering views of the harbour or, for the ultimate indulgence, check into one of the two suites, which have views of both from private terraces on either side. Three rooms are equipped for wheelchairs, including barrier-free showers. Staff are warm and friendly.
