Lonely Planet review

The Base chain squeezes backpackers of all nationalities into one seamless, chromium-plated mass. The St Kilda branch exemplifies the philosophy: everything's colour-coded and seamlessly integrated. If you want to give your brain a rest and be part of the program, then give it a go.Besides the glamorous beachside location, Base has a few notable benefits. Base has something called the Girls Sanctuary, where no boys are allowed and females are showered with shampoo and body products on arrival. They also enjoy feather pillows and free use of hairdryers and hair straighteners. The doubles, with their funky futons and white linen, look like they belong in a boutique hotel rather than a hostel. Elsewhere there's a unisex bar and a full range of classic leisure options such as a pool table. A good-time party atmosphere prevails.
