Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Blessed be the Nunnery. Firstly a confession - this place is a fave, so bear with us while we sing hallelujah and wax a little lyrical. An absolute top-notch hostel epitomising great budget accommodation, the Nunnery delivers without the lemon-lipped attitude.

This 1888 Georgian building is a bit worn around the edges, but that just adds to its bucket loads of character and gracefully fading grandeur. Pious in its dedication to hospitality, the building retains sweeping staircases and many original period features - the walls are dripping with religious works of art and ornate stained-glass windows. Dorms feature clean carpet, firm mattresses and are in good order - some of the bigger dorms (such as No 1) have an en suite. Apart from the main building there's also the Nunnery Guesthouse and the Townhouse (minimum 10 people). Groups should consider booking the entire place (Townhouse sleeps 12, Guesthouse 21). And as for the location - words really just aren't enough...

Curious Fact

Built in 1888, The Nunnery really was a nunnery - check out the stained-glass windows and religious paraphernalia. The Daughters of Charity lived and worked here until 1990.
