Nice Balcony...

Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Housed in a fine Porfiriato-era building, this small (20-bed) hostel is on narrow tree-lined Calle Tabasco, a tranquil gateway to the Roma neighborhood, known for its cafes, galleries and bohemian atmosphere. Hardwood floors, ceiling mouldings and balconies bespeak a bygone elegance that contrasts nicely with the casual vibe.

Perhaps owing to its smallness - there are just three rooms - and easygoing, youthful staff, the Home is everything an international youth hostel is supposed to be: a place to meet other travelers, hang out and find out what's going on. The handsome front living room and airy rear terrace provide suitable spaces for such interaction. Much of the mood is attributable to manager Juancho, a friendly, well-informed Mexican who is no stranger to foreign travel himself. He's the sort of guy who loves sharing info on good, cheap places to eat, cool clubs and concert venues (ask if he's got any free passes). Some travelers, though, may find the place a bit too intimate, with eight bunk beds crammed into rooms that would probably hold six comfortably.

Author Tip

For architecture buffs, this part of Roma boasts an eclectic panorama dating from the Porfirio Díaz regime, when mimicry of Parisian design was all the rage. If you're here on a weekend, check out the Tianguis de Oro, one of the city's more happening street markets, at Plaza Madrid, a couple blocks north. By night, head to Love, the ultra-hip lounge around the corner on Calle Medellín.
