Lonely Planet Review

Quotes The Stanza Hotel is one of the more respectable lodgings along Colonia Roma's signature avenue. Though rooms are of the standard-issue business-class variety, travelers may find this a reassuringly cushy transition stage coming from or going back to their native land.

The hotel is on the eastern end of Álvaro Obregón, one block from Av Cuauhtémoc, the busy artery that separates Roma from the rougher Doctores neighbourhood. Rooms are categorized as 'standard' or 'executive.' The latter exhibit a tad more class, with dark stained wood furniture, gallery-style lighting for the artwork and bigger bathrooms for that VIP feeling. Exterior units overlook either Álvaro Obregón's tree-lined median or Jardín Pushkin (with a small bust of the eponymous poet), where a major street market takes place on Wednesday and Saturday. Most of the Stanza's occupants are Mexicans in town on business, and they gather in the small lobby or adjacent Wings coffee shop (the latter is best avoided, especially with so many fine cafes in the zone). Reception staff try to be helpful, though tend to be overwhelmed.

Author Tip

This end of Roma has a busy, cheerful vibe. In the morning, join the office workers crowding either of the two branches of Bisquets Obregón off Calle Mérida for café con leche and fresh pastries. On Sundays, browse the delightfully random antiques market that rings Jardín Doctor Chávez across Av Cuauhtémoc. Friday evenings, venture into Colonia Doctores for wrestling at the 18,000-seat Arena México.
