Lonely Planet Review

Quotes A cornerstone in the downtown redevelopment project, the sleek glass Sheraton towers above quaint Alameda park, where indigenous families take their Sunday stroll. Most travelers are here on business (Air France's flight crews are regulars), but anyone desiring a dose of comfort and sublime cityscapes should be more than satisfied.

The 27-floor hotel contains more than 450 rooms, all above the 9th floor to maximize views; corner units afford the most expansive panorama of the Alameda. Those not on an expense account are most likely to stay in a 'classic' room, available in a range of soothing colors, from cobalt blue to cappuccino. Though not as spacious as the suites, they'll leave you plenty of room to move around, once you've managed to roll out of your exquisitely comfy bed. Busy as an airport terminal, the lobby includes a wine bar, hip lounge, bank, and a restaurant, El Cardenal, serving variations on Mexican classics like maguey worms and huitlacoche (corn fungus). A huge fitness center featuring saunas, massage clinic and a terrace cafe occupies the entire mezzanine. And should you need one, there's a heliport on the roof.

Author Tip

The restaurant features an adaptation of the Diego Rivera painting Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in the Alameda. The original depicts a pageant of Mexican historical figures mingling beneath the poplars of the nearby park. The entire 15m (50ft) tableau can be seen at its own museum on the Alameda's west end.

Curious Fact

Bill Clinton has checked in at the Sheraton Centro Histórico, as have the Dalai Lama, Rudy Giuliani and Marcel Marceau.
