Lonely Planet Review

Quotes The glittering interior of the Ambassador could have been designed by an Indian Versace and the hotel is topped by Mumbai's only revolving restaurant. The glorious chintzy details extend to the rooms and you'll have the added satisfaction of staying in a Mumbai icon.

With a revolving rooftop restaurant, crystal chandeliers in the lobby and sculptures of Hindu gods flanking the front door, the Ambassador is wonderfully extravagant. Staff are eager to please and the hotel has oodles of character, with styling that falls somewhere between British, Raj and Versace - cherubs on the ceiling anyone? Rooms are also classy, with tasteful wooden furniture, powerful air-conditioning and excellent city views from the 8th floor upwards. The hotel has several bars and restaurants, including the revolving Pearl of the Orient restaurant on the 11th floor, or you can step out of the doorway and straight into a dozen other Churchgate eateries. The Sikh doorman seems to have boundless enthusiasm for his job - a tip probably wouldn't go amiss.

Author Tip

All the attractions of Fort and Churchgate are right on the doorstep so you can puff on a hookah pipe in Mocha, sink a cold Kingfisher in Gaylord (Veer Nariman Rd, Churchgate) or sip on some fine Darjeeling tea at the Tea Centre. Churchgate station is the gateway to the attractions of north Mumbai.
