Lonely Planet Review
Aiming for the Old World - the lobby is a rather shiny cacophony of marble, pillars, rugs, old New York prints - the 100-room, 12-floor Avalon is a pleasant boutique option in Midtown that reveals the influence of the Spanish owners.
Rooms are traditional and chintzy - with European landscape or Japanese paintings on striped walls, green floral carpets - something like a Waldorf for less. Smaller rooms include an armchair and armoire guarding the 70cm TV. All have shiny marble bathrooms. Suites are a good deal with wood-floor entries and a small sofa bed in the TV room by the window. The downstairs mahogany-panelled library has parlour furnishings. Guests get free access to a nearby Bally's Sports Club. There's also a restaurant on premises.
