Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Hôtel Masséna was taken over by new owners M and Mme Leng in 2005 and already the difference is striking. Mme Leng's artistic flair is evident in the first of her elegantly renovated rooms, and ultimately all 111 rooms will be given her designer treatment.

From the sunflower-yellow lobby of trompe l'oeil murals, to the vases of orchids, each of the renovated rooms in this 1906 building are different, with touches like organza canopies and warm, glowing wooden floors. The prettiest (and priciest) rooms, such as room 315, have their own glass-enclosed terrace and rounded outdoor balcony with views over the fountains splashing in the park below. (Rooms with their own terraces are slightly smaller than those without, but it's a decent trade-off.) Non-renovated rooms are cute in any case, with '60s-swirled shower curtains and candy-striping; and they're all individually air-conditioned. One floor is entirely non-smoking. You can take breakfast in the salon until 10:00, or, for extra decadence, in your room until 12:00. There are just 18 secure garage spaces including valet service, so definitely reserve ahead.

How To Get There

From Nice Cote d'Azur Airport (NCE):
Distance to Massena Hotel is 10 kilometres, approximately 20 minutes' drive.

Getting there. Taxis from the airport cost about 20 EUR-25 EUR to Nice. There are additional fees for motorway tolls and extra luggage, and fares are more expensive at night. Gare St Augustin station is 500 metres from the terminals; trains run from here to Nice Gare Ville station. Buses run to Nice (numbers 23, 98, and 99). Prices are all subject to change.

Getting around. Nice city centre is compact and easy to explore on foot, particularly the seafront and Vieux Nice. Parts of central Nice are pedestrianised. Buses operate within the city centre and along the Cote d'Azur. Driving is not recommended within the city, and taxis are expensive. There is car parking nearby.

Driving directions. From Promenade des Anglais, follow signs for Place Massena.
At Place Massena, take the first street on the right before Galleries Lafayette. The hotel is on Rue Gioffredo.

Author Tip

There's no pool here, but Hôtel Masséna has an arrangement with the Rhul Plage private beach, where your entry fee gets you access, as well as shade, and a sun lounge (because, of course, Nice's beaches are the pebbled variety, so spreading out a towel is not an option). Afterwards (or before - it opens at 07:00), the hotel's orchid-filled bar is a sedate, sophisticated spot for a drink.
