Lonely Planet Review

Quotes An intimate little gem, the Villa la Tour nestles within the walls of an 18th-century convent with exquisite rooms and a coveted location as the only hotel inside Nice's enticing old town.

Run personally by owner Barbara Kimmig, Villa la Tour's ground floor salon houses antiques, leather lounges, and a long communal candlelit table where Barbara serves classical French breakfasts. Organza curtains frame the windows of air conditioned rooms, each individually decorated with rustic touches like French-washed walls, coir carpets, glazed checkerboard-tiled bathrooms with oversize showers and fragrant soaps from the Fragonard perfumery in Grasse, and quirky details like bedside lamps designed like chic little paper shopping bags. Four rooms have romantic balconies, and the more expensive rooms look out over the old town. Climb the narrow stairs to reach the tiny rooftop terrace crowned by the neighbouring St François clock tower.

How To Get There

From Nice Cote d'Azur Airport (NCE):
Distance to the Villa La Tour is 7 kilometres, approximately 20 minutes' drive.

Getting there. Taxis from the airport cost about 20 EUR-25 EUR to Nice. There are additional fees for motorway tolls and extra luggage, and fares are more expensive at night. Gare St Augustin station is 500 metres from the terminals; trains run from here to Nice Gare Ville station. And buses also run to Nice (numbers 23, 98, and 99). Prices are all subject to change.

Getting around. Nice city centre is compact and easy to explore on foot, particularly the seafront and Vieux Nice. Parts of central Nice are pedestrianised. Buses operate within the city centre and along the Cote d'Azur. Driving is not recommended within the city, and taxis are expensive.

Driving directions. From the airport, continue straight on the Promenade des Anglais with the sea on the right.
After Hotel Meridien, turn left onto Place Massena.
Continue straight onto avenue Jean Jaures.
After St Francois Square, take the next small street on the right for the hotel.

Author Tip

Another old town treasure is just opposite across little rue de la Tour. The utterly untouristy Cave de la Tour (Tue-Sat 07:00-19:00, Sun 07:00-12:00, closed Mon) combines a wonderful wine shop and a cafe/bar serving just one main dish a day, made from ingredients sourced at the nearby markets.
