Lonely Planet Review

Quotes This three-star place with 23 rooms awash in antiques, old prints and fresh flowers is an oasis in the Latin Quarter just steps from Notre Dame and the Seine. All rooms have air-con.

The hotel is part of the same group as the Hôtel de Lutèce on the Île de St-Louis and also exudes 'country chic'; the huge lobby (or salon) with its terracotta tiles, working fireplace dating back to the 18th century and various portraits (including one of the good king and hotel's namesake) would not be out of place in a manor house in Normandy. (Whatever you do, don't confuse this hotel with the bare-bones budget hotel of the same name on the Île de la Cité.) A rather large (for a hotel in the Latin Quarter, that is) tiled lift links the lobby with the hotel's six floors. Rooms - including the less-than-petite singles on the top floor - look onto a peaceful and quite bright courtyard or onto the street, with dramatic views of Église St-Séverin and its flying buttresses.

Author Tip

Le Caveau de la Huchette (5 Rue de la Huchette, 5e) jazz club, in a medieval cellar just a block north of the hotel, is where virtually all the jazz greats have played since the end of WWII.

Curious Fact

France enjoyed an era of order and prosperity in the 17th-century under the rule of Henri IV (1589-1610), who is famously credited with having wished all of his subjects to have a poule au pot, a 'chicken in the pot', every Sunday.
