Summer breakfast in garden

Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Someone has gone and taken an 18th-century building and spun it into the 21st-century, with tasteful greys, blacks and burgundies in the 38 guestrooms. History is reflected in the lobby, with its antique furnishings, convivial bar and, in winter, open fire.

The inner courtyard is a delight for drinks and/or breakfast in fine weather. Guestrooms are chic and contemporary, with very simple lines and muted colours though some (eg room No 24) retain such features as exposed ancient beams. We appreciate the fine-quality chenille bed covers and the tight rush matting on the floors, but give us the fine bathrooms, with their terracotta tiles and fine, fluffy towels and dressing gowns of Egyptian cotton. Another plus: some of the corridors are aligned in such a way that their windows allow in plenty of natural light. The hotel has wheelchair accessible rooms as well as some for nonsmokers. There's air-con throughout.

Author Tip

When the weather is warm, Parisians of all ages flock to the formal terraces and chestnut groves of the 23-hectare Luxembourg Garden, just across the street from the hotel, to read and sunbathe. Here you'll also find the Musée du Luxembourg in the old orangery of the Palais du Luxembourg, which now hosts very prestigious temporary art exhibitions.

Curious Fact

When Catherine de Medici, future consort to François' son, Henri II, arrived in Paris in 1533, she brought with her a team of Florentine chefs and pastry cooks adept in the subtleties of Italian Renaissance cooking. They introduced such delicacies as aspics, truffles, quenelles (dumplings), artichokes, macaroons and puddings to the French court.
