Lonely Planet Review

Quotes This stunning boutique hotel is in the Hôtel Costes stable and was done up by designer Jacques Garcia, one of the most fashionable interior decorators in Paris. The result: romantic French neogothic combined with Orientalia.

This property is built more for romance than business; rooms are not particularly large - they'll actually warn you of that at the front desk. Still, we love the mosaic-tiled and black-marble bathrooms, the beautiful silk fabric on the walls and the comfortable overstuffed chaises-longues that demand a bit of lounging about. At times a bit theatrical and never really practical, the 29 rooms and one suite are individual and very personal; the clientele they attract is less film star comme chez Costes and more minor royalty. There is not a bar or restaurant in the hotel, but the neighbourhood is saturated with both. Rooms are air-conditioned throughout.

Author Tip

Another oasis - this time a straight one in what is a very gay section of the Marais - is the Lizard Lounge (8 rue du Bourg-Tibourg, 4th), just opposite the hotel, with pints, cocktails and something of a pulling scene.

Curious Fact

Bourg in French means 'market town' or 'village' suggesting that this area was once separate from central Paris.
