Lonely Planet Review

Quotes A fair way out of the town centre, Penang's YMCA offers the usual simple but spotless standards you would expect. It has a couple of restaurants and a shop, and is a pleasant alternative to the rougher-edged hostels in town.

The YMCA has been in Penang for a long time, and the main building here is a rather ugly, ageing affair, but recent additions have jazzed the place up and the new wing has lift access. There are 70 rooms in total, which are simple, unpretentious and clean. All have air-con, attached shower and TV, so for this price they are a bargain. Of course, there is a slightly institutional feel to the YMCA, but good on-site facilities including a provisions shop, well-equipped gym, badminton courts and even a beauty salon make it feel more like an economical mid-range hotel, and the atmosphere is friendly and sociable.

Author Tip

The YMCA isn't in the most convenient of locations. The city's polo field and general hospital are just down the road, but it's a long walk along a busy road into town.
