Lonely Planet Review

Quotes A huge building reached through a private courtyard, Dragon Hotel is a Pokhara survivor. A timely renovation has raised standards to their old levels and the lobby is full of Tibetan knick-knacks. Rooms are spacious and atmospheric, with dark wood panels and mountain views.

If you find the hubbub at Lakeside a bit overpowering, this comfortingly old-fashioned place is hidden away near the Phewa (Pardi) Dam at Damside. The Dragon was one of the first hotels to get established in Pokhara, forging its business on wealthy trekkers bound for the Annapurna Conservation Area. It's not as cutting edge as it used to be, but the 1970s-meets-1870s styling is a refreshing change from the bland concrete constructions seen elsewhere in Pokhara. The interior of the hotel is covered in wood panelling and rooms are large, characterful and comfortable. Deluxe rooms have jaw-dropping mountain views and the courtyard creates an air of seclusion and privacy. The Nepal Mountaineering Association has its offices in the same building.

Author Tip

Watch dawn over the mountains from your bed, then take a hearty breakfast before attempting the trek to the World Peace Pagoda, starting on the footbridge below the Phewa (Pardi) Dam. After soaking up the lake and mountain views, head home for a hot shower and a bottle of Everest beer in the hotel bar.
