Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Close to the Royal Palace and the city bus stand, the inviting Snowland is a mid-range hotel with budget prices. You don't get much of a garden, but you do get huge, clean rooms with red-hot power showers and a calm and relaxing atmosphere.

Hotel Snowland started out as a mid-range hotel for upmarket tour groups. Prices have dropped but standards certainly haven't. Rooms are gigantic - cat swingers will have a field day - and the showers have real punch and genuinely hot water, perfect for aching muscles after a long walk in the hills. You also get cable TV and a powerful ceiling fan - a boon during the long hot months before the monsoon. The hotel is set back from the road in a gated compound and rooms are spread over several tidy modern blocks in the garden at the back (it's no Giverny but it creates a buffer between you and the busy road outside). There's a simple on-site restaurant, and dozens of other choices for a meal or drink within metres of the front door.

Author Tip

Get up at first light and head to the roof for a morning view of Mt Machhapuchhare before venturing out along the lakeshore for breakfast. Rent a motorcycle or bike and follow the dirt road round the lake, then head home to wash off the trail dust with a piping hot shower. After dark, relax with a book or join the party people across the road at Club Amsterdam.
