Lonely Planet Review

Quotes This big stone-clad place on the alley beside Hotel Mountain Top has a pleasing air of grandeur. It's a cut above the surrounding hotels and there are balconies on every level. The decor is a bit flowery but rooms are very comfortable.

Only a handful of places in Pokhara fill the gap between mid-range and top end and Hotel Stupa punches well above its weight when it comes to facilities and service. The halls are lined with shimmering white marble and rooms are cosy and modern, though the flowery sheets and curtains can take some getting used to. Don't be put off by the flashy lobby - prices are quite reasonable, particularly when you consider the facilities. There's a small restaurant and parking area and the communal balconies offer inspiring views of the Annapurna Himalaya. It's obvious where the name comes from - the building and grounds are full of scale models of the stupa at Bodhnath. A new annexe is under construction in the gardens.

Author Tip

Wake up early and head to the balcony to admire the mountain vista before the clouds roll in, then stroll down to one of the bakeries by the lake for morning coffee and a cinnamon roll. After breakfast, take a taxi from Camping Chowk to the atmospheric Bat Cave and pop into the Gurkha Museum before enjoying a steak supper at the New Everest Steak House.
