Lonely Planet Review
Set on the island below most Legií (Legions Bridge), this is the most attractive of the five Travellers' Hostels in Prague, though it's only open in summer. It has huge dorms and a garden bar with barbecue, and there's an open-air cinema on the island too.
Occupying a 19th-century building which has clearly seen better days, this hostel has a couple of huge single-sex dorms containing between 20 and 50 beds, so if it's peace and privacy you're looking for, look elsewhere. Having said that, it's a friendly and sociable place, and the young, international backpacking crowd that inhabit it during the summer months seem to enjoy the casual communal atmosphere. The dorms are pretty basic, simple affairs, but it's the location that's the big draw here. 'Marksmen's Island' is a green, leafy space where locals have picnics and walk their dogs, where the occasional drunk sprawls in the grass, and where the views upriver are fantastic. The outdoor cinema on the island shows Hollywood films in English, and concerts and other events take place here in summer as well.

Author Tip
The island itself is a perfect spot to chill out, have a picnic and a drink and gaze upriver. Strelecký Ostrov, an upmarket restaurant right next door to the hostel, has a terrace offering cheaper fare. Kampa Park, home to the Kampa Museum and the Tato Kojkej bar, is a 10min walk away, while the Laterna Magika theatre is a short walk in the opposite direction.
Curious Fact
'Marksmen's Island' was so named because it was once used for target practice by the Prague Castle garrison.
