An overhaul has given the place an almost artful quality. The rooms, painted in cool, elegant tones, have a light and airy feel. Large white quilts, light hardwoods, stylish furnishings and simple artwork all complement each other nicely. Big windows get lots of natural light - whether you opt for the front-facing ocean views (deluxe) or still-decent lateral ocean views (superiors). Most of the rooms have balconies. Those that don't are the corner rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows (a worthy trade-off). The deluxe rooms also have flatscreen TVs and CD players and a bit more leg room. There's a rooftop pool, a workout centre and an elegant restaurant with superb views no matter where you sit.

Around the corner, stop in for a meal at Amir (tel: 2275 5596; Rua Ronald de Carvalho 55C), one of the city's best Middle-Eastern places. Sharply dressed waiters present tasty platters to a largely local crowd.
