Quotes This small, homely spot is one of Rio's newest additions to the hostel scene. The Lighthouse consists of eight-bed dorm rooms and one private double (with a fold-out sofa). It's three blocks from the beach.

Along with a handful of other budget spots on this quiet lane, the Lighthouse has an easy-going vibe and clean, simple rooms that attract a good mix of backpackers. The double is like the very stylish dorm room you wish you had in college but never did. It has a wood floor, nice lighting and orange gauzy curtains, and the CD player and TV with DVD are the perfect distractions during rainy nights or after a long day at the beach. The friendly Brazilian-New Zealand couple that runs the hostel can advise about the best surf spots, nightlife options and the choice eateries in restaurant-packed Ipanema.

How To Get There

From the airport (GIG): Catch the 'Real' Shuttle bus to Ipanema, get off at the 'Sol Ipanema' hotel. Walk away from the beach until you get to Barão da Torre, turn right and look for No 175 (next to 'New Natural' Restaurant), open the gate and we are the last house on the left, No 20. Taxi R$40-60 Bus Station (Rodoviária): A/C bus to Ipanema (REAL Company) approx R$7 Local Buses No's 474 & 485 saying Ipanema. Taxi R$20-30 Note: If arriving after 10pm, push the buzzer for Casa 20 and a Night Guard will come to let you in.

Do aeroporto Internacional (GIG): Ônibus da viação "Real" para Ipanema, saltar no hotel "Sol Ipanema". Andar na direção oposta a praia até alcançar a Rua Barão da Torre, virar a direita e procurar o número 175 (ao lado do Restaurante "New Natural"), abrir o portão e ir para a última casa à esquerda, número 20. Taxi:R$40-50 Da Rodoviária Novo Rio: A/C ônibus para Ipanema (Real) aproximadamente R$7,00. Ônibus comum números 474 & 485 para Ipanema. Taxi:R$20-25 Obs: Chegando após as 10:00pm, tocar a campainha da casa 20 e aguardar o segurança abrir o portão.

Author Tip

One of Ipanema's best record stores is a few steps west of the hostel. Toca do Vinícius (tel: 2247 5227; Rua Vinícius de Moraes 129) sells a good selection of bossa and MPB, with the occasional in-store concert.

Curious Fact

All the wax you see in the kitchen isn't a scientific experiment gone wrong. In fact, one of the owners is an avid candle maker. Those interested in learning the finer points of the art can even sign up for a class.
